Full Range Segmented ESL Build Guide

If you are looking for the Segmented ESL Build Guide (the prior version of these speakers) that page is located HERE. This page documents the new build.

This is very much a work in progress. After several exchanges on the DIY Audio, Planars and Exotics forums, I decided to post the pictures and descriptions as I make progress on my new build. I invite comments and questions as I go along. Part of the enjoyment in making these speakers is the discussions that undoubtedly arise.

One of the goals of this website is to have a complete enough description of the process that someone else could duplicate it. If there is a passage or description that is not clear to you, please let me know so that I can take more photos, edit the description or somehow make it more clear. Since I am in the process of doing the build, it is a good time to take more in-process photos.

The goal of this build project is an ESL that is close to full-range. In general I'm shooting for a large panel (23"x47") with a 0.125 d/s, electrically divided into about 22-25 sections capable of good response down to about 40 Hz. So far, I am very pleased with the results. It does not quite get down to 40 Hz, but does quite well into the 45Hz region.

I have been greatly enjoying listening to the speakers!

Status update

This summer (2015) I have been experimenting with self-bias power supplies. I have had a few prototypes that have been OK, but not fantastic, and now have one I am satisfied with. It is nice not to have to deal with an AC power supply in addition to the speaker wire (and fewer wires are much appreciated by the wife!). You can read about it HERE
